Overview

The Polaris Ride Command system was the main reason the Digital Design & Experience team in Silicon Valley came into existence. Until then, Polaris was buying a customized hardware and software platform from a 3rd party supplier, which is common in the automotive and motorcycle industries. With limited ability to make significant changes, it was expensive from both a hardware and software perspective. Polaris purchased a hardware company based outside of Portland, Oregon to supply custom display hardware, and opened a software office in Sunnyvale, California, in order to build a new software platform from the ground up.

The first version of Ride Command was designed to meet, and ultimately exceed, the functionality of the previous generation 3rd party system. It had to work on a 7” TFT touchscreen display, and stand up to the rigors of hard outdoor use. The design had to be easy to read and use while bouncing down trails, yet powerful and robust in its feature set. It also has an ambient light sensor that enables automatic switching of the UI from day mode to night mode depending on ambient light, which made the visual design double the challenge.
